Prostate Cancer Diagnosis of Secretary Lloyd Austin Draws Attention to Disease

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, 70, was admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on December 22, 2023, where he underwent surgery for prostate cancer, developed an infection, and was admitted to intensive care on January 1. 

Austin, recovering at home, expressed gratitude to medical staff, stating he's eager to fully recover and return to the Pentagon. 

News of Secretary Austin's battle with prostate cancer continues to raise awareness about a disease that affects 1 in 8 men. Black men are nearly twice as likely to be diagnosed and 1 in 5 veterans will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. These are not just "stats". They are fathers, sons, brothers and friends who need support and understanding.
