Prostate Cancer Policy Priorities

ZERO leads the charge on Capitol Hill to increase research funding, eliminate barriers to early detection, and coordinate efforts across all federal agencies.

Capitol 2024

ZERO fights on behalf of patients and their loved ones to create a future where prostate cancer is diagnosed early, no matter who you are or where you live, and new treatments and innovations are developed to free patients from their prostate cancer and avoid side effects. We’re on our way to Generation ZERO, the first generation free from prostate cancer.

In broad terms, ZERO has four major areas of focus in our advocacy efforts.

Federal research funding

Since ZERO began in 1996 as the National Prostate Cancer Coalition, we have fought to increase federal funding for the Prostate Cancer Research Program, taking it from $45 million in 1997 to $110 million in 2024.

Awareness in high-risk groups

What you don’t know can hurt you. Black men and those with a family history of prostate cancer have an especially high risk of developing the disease. ZERO is committed to ensuring that funds are available for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to dedicate efforts to raising prostate cancer awareness among high-risk populations.

Access to early detection

Early detection saves lives. Unlike other forms of cancer, patients are often forced to pay out-of-pocket costs in order to get screened — even for individuals who have genetic factors or exposure to chemicals that would increase their risk of disease.

Coordinating federal resources

ZERO leads the charge to coordinate the many government bodies that touch prostate cancer research in some form or another. Getting everyone in the same room helps move us towards the end of prostate cancer as quickly and efficiently as possible.

These policy issues are ZERO’s top priorities at this time, but they aren’t the only policies we support. To receive ZERO’s assistance on other policy issues that concern the prostate cancer community, please contact Ali Manson, VP of Government Relations and Advocacy at ali@zerocancer.org.
