ZERO Champion Spotlight: Dan “Mac” McElhaney May 12, 2021 There is no group of people quite like our ZERO Champions: enthusiastic, committed, inspiring, and leading the fight to end prostate cancer. Meet David “Mac” McElhaney, one of our newest ZERO Champions from Huntsville, AL. After leading one of the support hours on radiation in the Virtual Lounge for the ZERO 2021 Summit, Mac reached out about getting more involved in ZERO’s mission. Soon enough, he became a self sign-up ZERO Champion, and he has already begun to make ambitious plans related to prostate cancer reform. “You are your own advocate,” Mac told ZERO. “You have to figure out what’s best for you. ZERO is great because it’s got loads of information to help people figure that out for themselves.”Mac first heard about ZERO from UsToo, a fellow prostate cancer foundation that was spreading the word about the 2021 ZERO Summit. Mac jumped on the opportunity to be a part of it, and couldn’t be more thrilled about leading his first virtual session on radiation treatment.“At Summit, I really liked the format and I really liked all the people that I met. I’m looking forward to being a mentor and an advocate alongside ZERO.”As a prostate cancer survivor himself, Mac understands the importance of kinship and brotherhood within the prostate cancer community. Last year, he founded his own support group for men with prostate cancer, as well as caregivers and loved ones who are affected by the disease. Right now, the group consists of eight men and is entirely virtual; however, Mac is always looking towards the future. He has plans to host the support group at Oakwood University Church in Huntsville as soon as it is safe to do so. Additionally, Mac wrote and published a book last year entitled My Walk with God through Prostate Cancer. The book details his prostate cancer journey, and how his faith and family helped him persevere. “I struggled with so many questions about prostate cancer, so I really wrote this book to help other people struggling with the same things that I did,” Mac said. The book is available on Amazon as well as Barnes and Noble for digital downloads!By joining the ZERO network, Mac is hoping to bring more prostate cancer resources and fundraising events to his local community. For example, he has long wanted to host a run/walk event in collaboration with his urology practice in Huntsville. Mac is also interested in joining ZERO’s MENtor program to provide one-on-one support to men with prostate cancer. Whatever endeavor he embarks on, Mac is dedicated to the cause and ready to make an impact on the prostate cancer community. We are so excited to have Mac join our cohort of amazing ZERO Champions!
