December 8, 2020 — Washington, D.C. — Baseball Hall of Fame Legend and 19-time All-Star Cal Ripken, Jr. (known as “The Iron Man”) will head to bat as the official mission speaker of the 2021 ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit. The ZERO Prostate Cancer Summit, hosted by ZERO Prostate Cancer and held virtually this winter, brings together the top minds in medicine, research,  education, and advocacy with a national community of passionate prostate cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones. On March 1, Ripken will be joined alongside his physician and urologist, Dr. Ronald Tutrone of Chesapeake Urology Associates, to share his personal prostate cancer story of faith and triumph.

The former Baltimore Orioles “Iron Man” is one of baseball’s all-time greatest athletes, known for playing in 2,632 consecutive games, eclipsing what was once thought to be an unbreakable record of 2,130 previously set by the legendary Lou Gehrig.

In August, the 21-year Major Leaguer announced that he was recently diagnosed with and successfully treated for prostate cancer. “When I learned I had prostate cancer, I was shocked, since I didn’t present any traditional signs or symptoms of the disease,” said Ripken. “Now I know this is a common experience for many men who battle this ‘silent killer’ and I’m proud and honored to share my story at the ZERO Summit.”

“Cal Ripken has provided a lifetime of inspiration to many. His story will empower and inspire Summit attendees and all those impacted by this awful disease to give them hope and courage,” said Jamie Bearse, ZERO CEO. “We are beyond grateful for the awareness he’s bringing to this extremely common disease that kills a man every 18 minutes.”

Ripken will deliver his remarks live on Monday, March 1, 2021 (the specific time of his broadcast is to be announced at a later date). His broadcast can be viewed live on Facebook and the web at facebook.com/ZeroProstateCancer or zerocancer.org/summit. Viewers are encouraged to register for the Summit to receive event updates and information on additional speakers and topics. It’s free to sign up at zerocancer.org/summit.

Since its inception more than 25 years ago, the Annual ZERO Summit has become the most impactful meeting in the prostate cancer community. More than 1,000 attendees are expected to attend the upcoming virtual ZERO Summit. This year’s Summit moved to an online format due to COVID-19, but will still bring the prostate cancer community together to share the latest breaking news and information related to disease education, research breakthroughs, advocacy efforts, and more.

ZERO is grateful to our partner and Summit sponsor, Exosome Diagnostics, for helping bring Cal Ripken, Jr. to the Summit audience. Ripken learned of his prostate cancer diagnosis via the ExoDx Prostate test, a non-invasive urine test that helps a man and his physician determine the risk of high-grade prostate cancer on biopsy. Members of the media wishing to speak with Ripken regarding his prostate cancer experience can email Karla.Gonye@bio-techne.com.
