POPCaP Authorization Act Introduction – Statement from ZERO Prostate Cancer

The POPCaP Authorization Act: Urgent Action Required

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Precision Oncology Program for Cancer of the Prostate (POPCaP) Authorization Act, H.R. 5883, represents critical progress in combating prostate cancer among those who served our nation. While introducing this legislation marks an important first step,  Congressional passage is essential to save lives. We commend Reps. Greg Murphy, MD (R-N.C.), and Herb Conaway, MD (D-N.J.) for their leadership in championing this vital legislation.

The Issue

Veterans face elevated prostate cancer risk due to environmental exposures during service. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis among VA patients. Among the 9 million veterans enrolled in VA healthcare, African American servicemembers face devastating disparities: they are twice as likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and twice as likely to die from it compared to their white counterparts. Currently, the POPCaP offers precision medicine and clinical trial access for veterans with prostate cancer, but changes in the VA threaten its continued success.

The Solution

The POPCaP Authorization Act strengthens the VA's commitment to providing veterans with the best available prostate cancer care while advancing precision oncology research. This program uniquely positions the VA to generate breakthroughs that will benefit all 3.3 million American men living with prostate cancer.

The Ask

We urge Congress to pass the POPCaP Authorization Act and ensure veterans continue to have access to the best prostate cancer care available. Our veterans deserve access to cutting-edge prostate cancer care. Congressional action today determines whether POPCaP delivers on its life-saving promise or becomes another well-intentioned program weakened by inadequate resources. By passing this legislation, Congress can demonstrate that our commitment to those who served is as strong as their commitment to our nation.
