ZEROHour Prostate Cancer Newsletter February 3, 2025 Jump To Jump To Subscribe Breaking Barriers: Black History Month and the Fight Against Prostate Cancer This Black History Month, we're spotlighting a critical health disparity in our community: Black men face a significantly higher risk of prostate cancer, with one in six developing the disease in their lifetime. While these statistics are sobering—Black men are 2.1 times more likely to die from prostate cancer than white men—ZERO is committed to changing this narrative through awareness, advocacy, and action. Our Black Men's Prostate Cancer Initiative provides targeted support through educational resources, support groups, and more. We're working to address historical barriers to care, from increasing access to PSA testing to combating racial bias in healthcare delivery. Early detection is key: Black men should begin prostate cancer screening discussions with their doctors by age 40. Additionally, through ZERO360, our comprehensive support service, we're ensuring that Black men and their families have access to the resources they need for treatment and survival. Healthcare Resources Stars Strut for a Cause: NYFW Opens with ZERO's Annual Blue Jacket Fashion Show Tomorrow, on World Cancer Day, New York Fashion Week kicks off with a powerful statement about men's health. With Johnson & Johnson matching donations up to $10,000 through March 1, your contribution will help create a future where no family faces prostate cancer alone. Support The BJFS Cancer Statistics 2025: Understanding the Numbers The American Cancer Society released its annual cancer statistics, projecting 313,780 new prostate cancer cases and 35,770 deaths in 2025. While these numbers are sobering, the data has both challenge and hope. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer diagnosis in men, accounting for 30% of all male cancer cases. After years of decline, incidence rates have risen by 3% annually since 2014, driven by larger increases in advanced-stage diagnoses. However, improved screening strategies, including MRI-integrated testing and genetic screening, are helping detect aggressive cancers earlier while reducing unnecessary biopsies. The five-year survival rate for prostate cancer now stands at 97%, among the highest for all cancers. These numbers underscore the critical importance of informed screening decisions and equitable access to care, particularly for Black men, who face higher risks and may benefit from earlier testing starting at age 40.
