An old colleague once told me the two most important questions are the ones from kindergarten: So what? And who cares? $880 billion is a lot of money, but if we’re talking about $880 billion in Medicaid cuts, so what? Why does Medicaid matter for prostate cancer patients and those at risk, and why should the prostate cancer community care about cuts?

What is Medicaid?

Not to be confused with Medicare (which pays for health costs for those over 65 and with certain disabilities), Medicaid is the joint federal and state program that covers health care costs for people with limited income and resources. The federal government sets the floor for Medicaid - defining the minimum benefits and minimum eligibility criteria. States have the option to increase benefits and eligibility - and each one decides differently. As the saying goes, if you’ve seen one Medicaid program, you’ve seen… one Medicaid program.
