The Heart of the Mission: How Volunteers Power ZERO Prostate Cancer

At ZERO Prostate Cancer, our volunteers are the heartbeat of everything we do. They aren’t just helpers—they’re leaders, teachers, and friendly faces in towns all over the country. They help us reach more people and make sure families have the support they need. Simply put, we couldn’t do our work without them!

It’s All About Connection

Helping out is about more than just doing a job; it’s about making friends. Many people start volunteering because someone they love got sick.

The Blitz the Barriers initiative represents a powerful, community-driven approach to expanding access, awareness, and support in areas that need it most. Through Phase 1 efforts in Atlanta and Baltimore, recruiting more than 100 volunteers across both cities is a meaningful milestone that reflects both strong local engagement and the urgency of the mission.

These volunteers are not just numbers—they are trusted voices, connectors, and advocates helping to break down barriers to education, screening, and care. By building a dedicated base of trained and engaged volunteers in each city, ZERO is creating a more sustainable, localized model for impact, ensuring outreach is not only broader but also more intentional and community-centered.

For example, one family found ZERO Prostate Cancer after their dad found out he had cancer. They were looking for answers and to find community with folks who understood what they were going through. They started by just showing up to an event, but soon they were helping run things and sharing their own story to help others.

Helping Others Helps You, Too

Working together helped that family feel better, too.

  • His partner & a local friend signed up for training & started volunteering at health fairs and inviting survivors to attend support group meetings so they wouldn’t feel alone.
  • Their child recruited a student group to support local one-day events and told their father's story on the school campus.

By giving their time, they found strength and a sense of purpose during a tough time.

Saying "Thank You"

It’s also really important to say "thank you!" Our volunteers give so much energy and heart to our goal. We want them to know we see how hard they work.

We love to give them shoutouts on our Kudoboard or celebrate them at our Bold for Blue event. We don’t want to just thank them once a year—we want to celebrate them all the time.

A Place to Belong

We want every volunteer to feel like they belong to our big team. We listen to their ideas and make sure they feel respected. When someone feels like they’re part of a family, they’ll want to stay and help for a long time.

We’ll never stop supporting and growing our amazing community of volunteers. They’re the most important part of our team at ZERO Prostate Cancer. By working together, we can reach a future where prostate cancer detection is early, support is unwavering, and care is accessible to all
