Washington, D.C. — ZERO Prostate Cancer is pleased to announce Reginald Tucker-Seeley, MA, ScM, ScD, a leading public health and cancer researcher will join the ZERO team on September 1 as Vice President of Health Equity.

There is a long history of racial disparities in prostate cancer. Black men are 1.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 2.2 times more likely to die from the disease. Recent research suggests that these differences in health outcomes are caused by several factors within the U.S. healthcare system including access to care, insurance status, racial biases, and distrust in the medical system – and not explained by genetic differences.

“This newly-created role is critical in supporting ZERO’s mission to end this disease for all men. I’m thrilled to have Dr. Tucker-Seeley’s decades of experience in cancer, public health, and health disparities research to drive solutions and make significant strides in one of the most urgent challenges today in prostate cancer.” said Jamie Bearse, ZERO President & CEO.

Prior to joining ZERO, Dr. Tucker-Seeley served as the inaugural holder of the Edward L. Schneider chair and Assistant Professor of Gerontology in the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California (USC). At USC, he led the Tucker-Seeley Research Lab and worked on projects focused on financial hardship in cancer, social determinants of health, and health disparities; and he taught undergraduate and graduate courses on aging and social policy. Before joining the faculty at USC, he was an Assistant Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the Center for Community Based Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he taught courses on measuring and reporting health disparities.

Dr. Tucker-Seeley has a longstanding interest in the impact of health and social policy on racial/ethnic minorities and across socioeconomic groups. He has experience working on local and state-level health disparities policy, and in the measuring and reporting of health disparities at the state and local level. In 2017, Dr. Tucker-Seeley was selected for the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship Program. The fellowship included a one-year residency in Washington, D.C. working on health policy issues with Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office and her health policy team.

“The racial/ethnic and age-related disparities revealed during the COVID-19 pandemic and the continuing discussions related to systemic racism motivated me to move my efforts focused on health disparities reduction and health equity to the core of my work. This new role at ZERO provides an exciting opportunity to do just that by working with a committed organization to develop and implement a health equity strategy that makes tangible differences in the lives of men at highest risk of prostate cancer. Our goal is to create greater access to high quality healthcare, support in navigating the care process, and improved prostate cancer outcomes. I look forward to serving in this role at ZERO and partnering with men and their families, communities, and organizations to address racial/ethnic disparities in prostate cancer,” said Dr. Tucker-Seeley.

As part of ZERO’s management team, Dr. Tucker-Seeley will work with the prostate cancer community, healthcare organizations, sponsors, and like-minded partners and stakeholders to design and implement strategic health equity initiatives focused on improving health outcomes for the most high-risk individuals and their families while improving ZERO’s focus on health equity strategically and holistically. He will also collaborate with members of ZERO’s Prostate Cancer Racial Disparities Task Force.

At ZERO’s upcoming Town Hall Conversation with ZERO’s Racial Disparities Task Force on September 30, Dr. Tucker-Seeley will be formally introduced to the ZERO Community. He’ll join Task Force Co-chairs, Dr. Kelvin Moses and Robert Ginyard on a discussion about recent progress and the road map forward tackling racial/ethnic disparities in prostate cancer and efforts to create health equity.
