Every 15 minutes, someone dies of prostate cancer. 1 in 8 males get the disease. You can be a lifeline for patients who need it most: enabling free, one-on-one support. Protecting and expanding research for a cure. Spreading the word that catching the disease early can save men’s lives.
You can make a real difference for cancer patients who need help. Whether you’re a small channel or large, a gamer, variety streamer, artist, musician, or just chatting, you can have an immediate impact by fundraising and raising awareness for the cause!
ZERO’s here to support your charity streaming efforts. In addition to the info on this page, you can join ZERO’s official Discord server and ping Jeremy for help, or send him an email at streaming@zerocancer.org to talk about getting started.
First thing’s first, create a fundraising page that works best with your streaming software. Click the Join Now box above to see your choices.
After that, just a bit of planning and a bit of promotion will really turbo-charge your fundraising efforts. Even giving your charity stream a name and theme can take it to the next level and make it feel like an event.
1) Choose a Hook
Add a bit of spectacle by settling on a special activity, theme, or big reveal for your fundraiser. Give it a name and create promotional materials, so that it feels like a can’t-miss event within your community.
2) Set up Your Tools
Customize your fundraising page, explaining what you’re doing, including photos of yourself, and any custom graphics you’ve made for the campaign. Configure overlays in your broadcasting software, including a progress thermometer, donor list, and gift alerts.
Protip Vowing to do something outlandish if you meet your fundraising goal is a fantastic way to motivate donors.
Promise to take a pie to the face. Cosplay as something ridiculous. Do a 24-hour marathon, watch a terrible movie, try to beat a game with starting weapons, or slog through a game you’d prefer not to touch with a 10-foot pole.
Nothing brings forth the gifts like unleashing your audience’s inner troll. Just be sure to keep it safe and within the boundaries of the platform’s Terms of Service.
3) Motivate Donors
Come up with something spectacular when you’ve reached milestones and your overall fundraising goal. Donor perks are a great way to encourage giving, whether it’s a shout-out during your stream, giving access to custom content, offering having a multi-player session with donors, or even a giveaway.
4) Spread the Word
Promote early and often! Chat about your plans in streams leading up to the fundraiser. Post about it in social media and on Discord. Add a fundraising link to your streaming profile, and if you’re in touch with other content creators outside of their streams, ask if they’ll mention it.
5) Team Up
If you participate in an active Discord channel, have regular viewers who stream, or are part of a team/clan/regular gaming crew, see if your friends would be willing to join the fun and do a charity stream too! It’s easy to create a team page on your fundraising site, it’ll roll up a everyone’s efforts into a leader board and show how much you’ve raised together.
6) Go Live
Fundraiser time, you got this. Mention the cause frequently and don’t be bashful asking for donations, it’ll encourage giving and keep it fresh as viewers come and go during your stream. Check out the next section for some quick stats and talking points about the impact of each gift. And be sure to show the love each time a viewer donates.
7) Celebrate the Good You’ve Done
Thank you! Whether you’ve raised a buck or a billion, you’re making difference by raising awareness about a deadly – but wholly preventable – disease, and helping patients who have nowhere else to turn! After the fundraiser, be sure to thank your donors and tell the stream what an impact they’ve had.
Donations, other ways to give, and where the money goes
How does my donation get direct support to patients?
Gifts covers the costs of expert one-on-one help through the ZERO360 program, which has delivered more than $2.5 Million in debt relief and is has become a crucial lifeline for prostate cancer patients during the COVID-19 crisis. It also drives our community support programs (including peer mentors for patients and caregivers and grants to local community providers) and fuels the fight to protect and expand research funding.
How do I know my gift will be used wisely?
Nobody is better at cutting overhead expenses to put your donation to work fighting prostate cancer: 86¢ on the dollar goes directly to programs and activities. ZERO is the only national prostate cancer nonprofit to have the best-possible grades for financial responsibility and transparency from watchdog groups Charity Navigator (4/4 stars) and GuideStar (Platinum).
Can I apply a check to my fundraiser total?
Sure. It’s best to avoid collecting money through your own bank, if possible have donors make checks out directly to ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and you can snail-mail them to:
515 King Street
Suite 420
Alexandria, VA 22314
Please allow 10-15 business days for processing and we’ll send tax receipts directly to your donors if they’ve provided their contact details.
Is my gift fully tax-deductible? What's ZERO's Federal Tax ID number?
ZERO is a full-fledged U.S. 401(c)(3), our EIN number is 59-3400922. Your donation is tax free to the full extent of the law, and if you’ve given us your contact info we’re happy to provide any additional tax documents you need beyond what JustGiving, Tiltify, or our website provides.
Do you have any merch I can share?
You can always send people to the ZERO Store, we’ve got branded gear and will handle all of the shipping and packing. ZERO is a Humble Bundle partner too, so purchases you make through our charity link will benefit back to the cause. And don’t forget Amazon Smile, you can select ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer and Amazon will donate .5% of all qualifying purchases to the cause.
Can businesses that donate goods and services get a tax receipt?
Depends on your set-up, but usually the gift has to pass through ZERO for us to cut a receipt. Ping Jeremy if you’ve got questions, he’ll see what we can do.
Be yourself. Your followers are tuning in to see you, so we’re not about to ask you to stop playing your favorite game, or change how you normally talk and interact with your community. Make sure your channel has the appropriate content warnings and enabled settings, then stream how you usually would (with regular appeals to donate, of course).
Do you have any limits on content?
Just the obvious: nothing illegal, hateful, harmful to viewers, or anything that violates sites’ Terms of Service. Don’t give out medical advice. Be clear that your opinions and actions are your own, and not official statements that ZERO has signed off on or something.
What about politics?
Discuss them to your heart’s content; prostate cancer doesn’t care what side of the aisle you’re on, so neither do we. ZERO works with anyone who is interested in protecting patients, expanding and protecting research, and getting us close to ending this disease.
What can I safely say about the disease, treatments, etc.?
Our talking points and stats are always safe to share. As for the medicine, best to leave that discussion between doctors and patients. ZERO doesn’t back any specific treatments, and our website has all kinds resources for those who need to know more about the disease.
Can someone from ZERO participate my fundraising stream?
If at all possible, yes. Contact Jeremy at streaming@zerocancer.org and let us know what you’ve got in mind.
About Prostate Cancer
What are the basics of prostate cancer?
1 in 8 men get prostate cancer, making it the most frequently diagnosed and second most deadly form of male cancer. It’s 99% survivable if caught early, but that chance plummets if it gets a chance to spread and fewer than half of those who get tested should. The result in 2020 has been grim: a man dies of prostate cancer every 16 minutes.
Are some men more at risk than others to prostate cancer?
Yes. African American men are more likely to get prostate cancer, and 2.5X more likely to die from it (even compared to Black men in other countries). One in eight men get prostate cancer on average, but that number is higher for military veterans, men of color, those with a family history, and members of the LGBTQ community. COVID-19 has increased danger for prostate cancer patients, as they may have compromised immune systems and many are suffering delays and/or outright lost access to treatment.
Is prostate cancer in men similar to breast cancer in women?
Yes, in many ways. Both are the most common forms of cancer for their genders and have similar mortality rates. But much less attention is given to prostate cancer than its female counterpart, it gets a fraction of the research funding, and maybe half as many men get tested for the disease.
What else is ZERO doing to make an impact?
ZERO has lead the charge on Capitol Hill to expand and protect prostate cancer research, securing more than $2 Billion in Federal funding to date. We’ve worked with State governments and the VA, expanding healthcare coverage and pathways to treatment for men who have increased risk of prostate cancer, including military veterans, African Americans, and those with family histories. And we’ve awarded millions in community grants for local patient support, testing, education, and research.
