Memphis Run/Walk Kicks Off the 2023 Season

After being rescheduled six months ago, the long-awaited Memphis Run/Walk event finally happened on April 2, 2023 to kick off the 2023 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk season. Over seventy-five people gathered to show their support for the prostate cancer (PCa) community, and the event was a testament to the resilience and determination of those who are dedicated to raising awareness about prostate cancer and finding a cure.

The host practice for the event was The Urology Group, P.C., working with leadership including Phillip O’Malley, Dr. Walter Rayford, and Trina Watson. They were thankful for the opportunity to be involved and are already thinking about how they can be even more involved in the future to help make a difference for their patients and community. This kind of commitment from medical professionals is essential to fighting prostate cancer and supporting those who are affected by it.

One of the highlights of the event was the local Man 2 Man support group, led by Clarence Williamson, which had a great showing with more than fifteen survivors in attendance. It was inspiring to see the survivors come out to support the cause and to connect with others who have been through similar experiences. The camaraderie and support of the community were truly heartwarming.

In addition to the great turnout and support, we are proud to have partnered with the Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC) to provide PSA testing at the event. PSA testing is a critical tool for detecting prostate cancer early and can be life-saving for those who are at risk. Thanks to this partnership, we were able to test fifteen men for prostate cancer at the Memphis Run/Walk event. This kind of testing and early detection can make a significant impact in the fight against prostate cancer and is one of the key reasons why events like the Memphis Run/Walk are so important.

The success of the Memphis Run/Walk is also reflected in the fundraising efforts, which raised more than $56,000. These funds will go towards supporting the PCa community and raising awareness about the disease. Looking to the future, there are many opportunities to grow and expand the PCa community in Western Tennessee. The success of the Memphis Run/Walk event is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.

In conclusion, the Memphis Run/Walk was a fantastic event that brought together the PCa community in Western Tennessee for the first time in almost ten years. The partnerships with amazing partners allowed us to provide critical PSA testing, and the fundraising efforts were successful in raising more than $56,000. We are grateful for the support and dedication of everyone involved and look forward to next year’s event. Mark your calendars for April 13, 2024, at Shelby Farms Park, where we will come together once again to support the fight against prostate cancer.
