While we celebrate a victory for prostate cancer research, we turn to the House of Representatives’ passage of the American Health Care Act (AHCA) with great concern not only for prostate cancer patients, but all patients with preexisting conditions.
Access to care is every bit as important as research. If patients do not have affordable health insurance and cannot benefit from the fruits of medical discoveries, that research is squandered.
The bill passed in the House undermines the ban on discrimination based on health status. The men and families we represent cannot go back to a time when insurance companies can deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions and force families to choose between purchasing basic needs and affording their health care coverage.
Bipartisan health care policy experts, such as Avalere Health, have analyzed the bill and concluded that the money set aside for people with preexisting conditions is woefully insufficient to meet their needs. ZERO is deeply concerned that affordability, coverage of products and services, and overall access will be impeded by allowing insurance companies to set their own rates – especially on risk pools like those at a genetic predisposition for prostate cancer, and enabling states to experiment with Medicaid coverage without appropriate patient protections.
ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer urges the U.S. Senate to reject this legislation.
As the fate of health care coverage is being debated, now more than ever your voice needs to be heard! Prostate cancer patients deserve access to quality and affordable care.
