Prostate Cancer Run/Walk Raises Funds and Awareness during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Syracuse, NY – ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer joins Associated Medical Professionals of NY in hosting the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this September. The goal of the race – part of a national event series – is to inspire the creation of Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free from prostate cancer. Syracuse and surrounding area community members will run and walk together on September 15 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 17 minutes.
Syracuse joins 40+ communities across the nation as part of the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series that are taking place during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September. The Run/Walk promotes awareness for prostate cancer and educates men about their risk. This year in New York, nearly 10,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and nearly 2,000 will die from the disease. New York has sixth highest incident rate for prostate cancer in the country.
“The ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk rallies communities and gives participants a voice in the fight to end prostate cancer,” said ZERO CEO Jamie Bearse. “We’re making prostate cancer a national priority. The Run/Walk series is a way to mobilize the prostate cancer community and raise funds for patient support programs to ensure that no man has to face prostate cancer alone.”
S. John Campanie, a practicing lawyer based in Central New York, felt shocked upon his prostate cancer diagnosis, but was thankful to connect with others in the prostate cancer community. Now, five years later, he is healthy and encourages all men to get their PSA checked. “Early detection was key for me, and my treatment appears to have been very effective.”
Run/Walk participants receive t-shirts, free food and prizes, and the opportunity to connect with others impacted by prostate cancer. A special ceremony for patients and survivors serves as the heart of every event. Funds raised during the Run/Walk event will go toward local and national efforts to provide research for new treatments, direct patient support, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. More than $4M was raised in the 2018 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk series.
The race will take place at Long Branch Park, located at 371 Long Branch Road, Syracuse, NY 13209. For more information, visit www.zeroprostatecancerrun.org/syracuse.
