Leading National Prostate Cancer Nonprofit Announces CEO and President Search

Jamie Bearse to transition from ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer after 21 years

Washington, D.C., January 19, 2023Jamie Bearse, President and CEO of ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, has announced his departure from ZERO after 21 years with the organization, effective on June 30, 2023.

Bearse’s remarkable tenure is best captured as being a catalyst for growth. As a result of his leadership, ZERO’s revenue, staff, and reserve has increased by 400%. In addition to instituting a growth mindset and strategy, Bearse set a high standard for ZERO to become an award-winning work culture committed to results. ZERO has been named one of the NonProfit Times’ “50 Best Places to Work For” eight out of the last nine years. In addition, the organization has been recognized seven times out of nine years with a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, most recently in 2022, with a 97.4 score out of 100.

“I speak for all my fellow board members, as well as everyone in the prostate cancer community who have benefitted over the years from Jamie’s exceptional leadership, in wishing him all the best as pursues the next chapter in his incredibly successful career. During his impactful tenure as CEO, ZERO has grown to be the premier nonprofit cancer organization in the nation, one that has been consistently there for men and their families affected by prostate cancer and a leading force in creating the first generation of men free from this terrible disease,” said Tom Bognnanno, ZERO’s Board of Directors Chair. “His relentless pursuit of excellence, inspirational leadership, and unwavering integrity has set him apart as a leader of rare quality that we will always be indebted to for building the dynamic organization that ZERO is today and that has become a model of success and innovation throughout the philanthropic community.”

Under Bearse’s transformative leadership, ZERO pioneered free mobile testing for prostate cancer screening more than 130,000 men nationwide, forged partnerships with NASCAR, NHL, Gillette, AutoNation, and other household names to increase disease awareness, built ZERO Prostate Cancer Run|Walk—the largest men’s health event series in the country, created and operated a $300M patient co-pay relief partnership, and created a vibrant and diverse nationwide chapter program to reach and support patients and families where they live.

In 2021, Bearse further united the prostate cancer community by merging with the next largest prostate cancer nonprofit, Us TOO International. This merger created a patient-centric powerhouse for the prostate cancer community, including a comprehensive support system for prostate cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, increased prostate cancer awareness, and greater access to care through a united advocacy platform.

Most recently, Bearse led a prostate cancer discussion as a part of the Biden administration’s Cancer Moonshot Initiative, specifically highlighting the need to increase prostate cancer awareness and access to screening among men of color. Over the years, Bearse has been a staunch advocate for health equity in prostate cancer. He hired ZERO’s first Vice President of Health Equity in 2021 and, working with ZERO’s Medical Advisory Board, forged a partnership with the Prostate Cancer Foundation to fund the 2022 ZERO-PCF VAlor Young Investigator Award for innovative research into the causes of racial disparities in prostate cancer and potential strategies to reduce them.

After more than two decades serving the prostate cancer community, Bearse leaves a lasting legacy of helping elevate the cause from a forbidden conversation to a national dialogue, building and galvanizing a passionate and engaged community, and giving nonprofits a new brand of leadership that champions the importance of building and investing in a healthy organizational culture.

“Since joining the organization in 2002 and becoming CEO in 2013, I have loved ZERO with all my heart,” said Bearse in a personal message to the ZERO community. “I have done my very best to create a loving culture of strong values that drives success in meeting the needs of patients and building a close-knit nationwide ZERO family filled with champions and cause heroes. I am especially proud to be part of this wonderful community.”

ZERO is actively seeking a passionate and dynamic leader to build on this culture and record of success to lead the organization as President & CEO. More information on that opportunity can be found here.
