Caregiver Connector Safely Connects Prostate Cancer Caregivers in a Time of Need
WASHINGTON, D.C. – To combat rising feelings of isolation and loneliness among prostate cancer caregivers, ZERO – The End of Prostate Cancer, the nation’s leading nonprofit in the fight against the disease, is launching a new program titled “Caregiver Connector.”
Caregiver Connector is a peer-to-peer support program for those currently caring for men with prostate cancer, as well as those who have lost their loved ones due to the disease. Peer-to-peer support complements other emotional or health services caregivers may be receiving, as it provides an emotional, social, and practical outlet. In a time when much communication must be done digitally or virtually, Caregiver Connector is an easy and safe way for caregivers to access a shoulder to lean on.
“Prostate cancer caregivers are already prone to feelings of loneliness and isolation,” said Patrice Brown, ZERO’s Vice President of Patient Programs and Advocacy.”Due to the necessary practice of social distancing to protect immunocompromised patients from the outbreak of COVID-19, caregivers are feeling an increased intensity to these common emotions. Caregiver Connector is designed to help caregivers connect virtually and digitally in a time of need.”
Through the program, prostate cancer caregivers receive ongoing one-on-one support from experienced and trained Caregiver Mentors. ZERO’s Caregiver Mentors have cared for brothers, fathers, husbands, sons, partners, grandfathers, friends, and are trained to support those in need. Caregiver Mentors offer their personal experiences and insights to help caregivers best care for themselves and their loved ones.
Caregiver Mentors and Mentees are matched after completing an online survey that identifies their main concerns, preferences, and patient status (stage of diagnosis, deceased, etc.)
“I’m excited and grateful to help other people,” said Athena Bogdanos, a Caregiver Mentor. “I want to help people treasure the moments they have with their loved one and have no regrets, since so much growth comes from caregiving.”
In a time of heightened stress due to both a cancer diagnosis and a pandemic, a program like Caregiver Connector is critical to the wellbeing of individuals caring for cancer patients. More information and the online survey to be matched with a mentor are available at zerocancer.org/caregiver-connector. Anyone seeking connection with a Caregiver Mentor is encouraged to apply.
