Fighting for Men and Families on Father’s Day
|

This year, 180,890 men will be told they have prostate cancer – many of whom may not have even known they were at risk for the disease at all. This June, we’re celebrating Men’s Health Month with the opportunity to educate men about how important it is to take charge of their health – especially where early detection and awareness of prostate cancer are concerned. Make a point to talk to the men in your life about the disease – you can use our “10 Things Everyone Should Know” to get started.
This June we are also celebrating men’s health with Do It For Dad! Honor your Dad and all the men suffering from prostate cancer this Father’s Day with a Tribute page on ZERO’s brand new Do-It-Yourself Fundraising portal. It’s free and incredibly easy, allowing you to share how important your Dad is while fundraising to help end prostate cancer. Come together with other daughters and sons from around the country who are raising awareness and funds and sharing their father’s stories of fighting prostate cancer. Create your Dad’s tribute page today!
If you’re in the Washington, D.C. or Atlanta areas, you can also join us on Father’s Day weekend for a Run/Walk. Both events are family-friendly and a great way to work on your fitness all while spending time with those that mean the most.

Thank You for Helping to Fight For Prostate Cancer Research Funding
|

Last week U.S. Senator John McCain, a long-standing opponent of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP), authored The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which attempted to eliminate the CDMRP at the DOD. The CDMRP, which includes the Prostate Cancer Research Program, funds brilliant breakthroughs in research for many diseases. Eliminating it would have meant potentially insurmountable barriers for researchers to get the resources they need to find a cure not only for prostate cancer, but for nearly 30 other diseases.
On Tuesday, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin’s amendment to stop this proposed red tape was successful in defeating the NDAA, halting McCain in his tracks. The amendment passed 66-32.
Thank you to all of ZERO’s advocates who called, emailed, tweeted, and spoke to their Senators about this vote, and to Senator Dick Durbin for his dedication to upholding much-needed cancer research funding.

Ken Griffey Sr. Joins ZERO for Chicago Run/Walk
|
Baseball legend Ken Griffey Sr. shared inspirational words at the ZERO Run/Walk in Joliet, IL on Saturday, June 4, as participants made their way to the starting line. A prostate cancer survivor and the spokesman for Bayer’s Men Who Speak Up campaign, Ken reminded attendees of the importance of being vocal about advanced prostate cancer and symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty walking or sleeping, unexplained pain or difficulty doing normal activities, which can indicate the disease is progressing.
Having lost four uncles to the disease, Ken has made his prostate health a priority from a young age. After receiving his early-stage diagnosis in 2006, Ken was struck by how difficult it was at first to talk about his prostate cancer, but over time, with the help of his family, he became more comfortable and is now speaking up about his experience to help other men like him. Run/Walk participants united to take a stand against prostate cancer with the help of Ken Sr., who chatted with patients and caregivers throughout the day.
“I’m fortunate that my doctor caught my prostate cancer early, but not all men will be so lucky. Being your own advocate is very important when it comes to maintaining your health. If I can encourage even one man to be vocal about advancing prostate cancer symptoms, then I’ve done my job,” said Ken Sr.

Staff Spotlight: ZERO Puts Boots on the Ground to Fight Prostate Cancer in California
|

A California man dies every three hours from prostate cancer. To combat this chilling fact, ZERO has launched a chapter in the Golden State to provide resources and support for men and their families, led by ZERO’s newest staff member, Vanessa Petersen.
As a 12-year non-profit veteran with experience in chapter building as well as local engagement and support, Vanessa joins ZERO to manage local outreach, patient support programs, and a growing number of run/walk events.
In her role as California Chapter Director, Vanessa will lead ZERO’s boots on the ground effort to engage local communities and provide patient support programs in California, and build on the continued success of ZERO’s four run/walk fundraising events in Long Beach, San Diego, Napa Valley, and San Francisco. The California Chapter joins ZERO’s growing base of regional chapters in Texas, the Midwest, and Pacific Northwest.

Beards Welcome Here: Wahl’s Facial Hair Friendly Cities Join the Fight
|
For the third year in a row, Wahl – the Official Sponsor of Facial Hair – is partnering with ZERO to bring beards and ‘staches together with prostate cancer awareness.
Once again Wahl has named the most facial hair friendly cities, and this year Miami tops the list! As a part of their annual Face the Day campaign, Wahl’s mobile barbershop will visit each of the cities named “Most Facial Hair Friendly”: Miami, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Atlanta, Austin, Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco, from June to September. The tour has already hit Miami and Dallas, and folks in Pittsburgh should prepare to change the facial hair game on June 11 and 12.
Visitors in each city will have the opportunity for a free trim from Wahl’s 30-foot mobile barbershop, but Face the Day is about more than helping men get their facial hair in tip-top shape: it also supports the fight against prostate cancer. For every free trim the mobile barbershop performs, Wahl will donate $1 to ZERO to help in the fight to end the disease.
You can learn more about the tour here.
