New Developments in Prostate Cancer Webinar

On Wednesday, June 30th, Dr. Tomasz Beer, Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Sciences University and ZERO Medical Advisory Board Member, joined the ZERO community to share an in-depth update on research, diagnosis, and treatment advances in prostate cancer from the 2021 annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting. Help us understand appetite loss and advanced cancer

Help us understand a potential treatment for loss of appetite in people with advanced cancer

Introducing a research study for loss of appetite in people with advanced cancer

Many people with advanced cancer struggle with low appetite levels and the weight loss that comes with it. That’s why we are researching a study drug — to understand its effect on appetite in people who are experiencing loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, weakness, and fatigue caused by advanced cancer.

We are looking for people who:

  • Are at least 18 years old
  • Are living with advanced prostate, nonsmall cell lung, pancreatic, colorectal, breast, or ovarian cancer

You will also need to meet a few other requirements in order to take part.

If you or someone you know may be interested in our study, please visit our site to learn more about taking part.

Symposium Wrap Up/Highlights

Racial Disparities Symposium

Last month, ZERO hosted its inaugural Racial Disparities in Prostate Cancer Symposium. During this half-day educational event, attendees from around the country had the opportunity to learn about disparities that exist between Black men and other men in prostate cancer incidence, treatment, and outcomes. These disparities are well-documented in research and literature and ZERO is working with our Racial Disparities Task Force on a variety of measures and interventions to help improve outcomes for men and families at the highest risk. In case you missed it, here are the session videos.

In addition, a newly launched microsite is now available discussing the racial disparities that exist in prostate cancer. This includes five separate pages of information, links to peer-reviewed published literature, and patient resources that men and their families at the highest risk can utilize to help make their prostate cancer journeys less difficult. Please visit www.zerocancer.org/disparities to learn more! A huge thank you to our sponsors, Janssen, Pfizer and AstraZeneca, for their support of the creation and launch of this new content and mini-site.

Veteran’s Webinar

Upcoming Veterans Webinar

Veterans are a high-risk population for prostate cancer, with an incidence rate that is twice that of the general population. It is critical that we protect our protectors. Join this educational webinar and hear from Dr. Minhaj Siddiqui about your risk for prostate cancer and what you should know about your treatment options. Veteran prostate cancer patient, Chris Provan, will share his story about how the key to his successful treatment was taking advantage of decision making tools and support resources. We’ll be joined by a VA representative who will offer tips and insight into how you can access care within the Veterans Health Administration, or in your community. We’ll also have a special appearance by an elected official who will tell you what new policy changes might affect your prostate cancer care soon. Visit our website to learn more about this free online event, or to register.

Kris and Michael Rangel

Honoring Her Husband

Kris Rangel, from San Antonio, TX, found ZERO in 2018 after her husband Michael was diagnosed with prostate cancer. That year they attended the San Antonio, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Corpus Christi Run/Walk events. Unfortunately, in 2019 at the young age of 44, Michael lost his battle to prostate cancer. Kris has made it her mission to raise awareness so other families don’t have to experience what they went through. In March 2021, Kris attended her first ZERO Summit and is in the process of becoming a Caregiver Mentor.

Know Your PSMA

A rise in your prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level can tell you if your metastatic prostate cancer is progressing. Prostate-specific membrane antigen, or PSMA, can tell you so much more. Once your cancer has spread to other parts of your body, PSA should not be the only biomarker you check.
