Chief Operating Officer

Full-Time Exempt-Salaried Remote

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for ensuring the organization’s goals and priorities are translated into the day-to-day execution. The COO plays a critical role in facilitating cross-team collaboration and organization efficiency. The COO is tasked with managing short-term outcomes including standard operating objectives of the organization’s management team, logistical details, as well as managing ZERO’s personnel and projects. The COO is an executive of the organization and will lead some to most VP level positions across the organization. The COO spends most of their time and energy implementing decisions, serving as the lead project manager across the organization, tactician, analyst, and lead on personnel and financial management. The ideal candidate is one who is a mission driven, people-centric leader, a collaborator who values organizational diversity, thrives on building efficiencies, sees cross-team opportunities/challenges and instinctively and brilliantly addresses them.

  • Overseeing the day-to-day operations and implementation of plans at ZERO including cross-team functions while minimizing procedures and helping amplify a culture of high responsibility and high freedom 
  • Working collaboratively with all teams and reporting important matters to the CEO & President 
  • Facilitates cross-team collaborations to support successful implementation of internal and external facing programs
  • The COO partners with staff to increase efficiencies in a number of ways including delegating tasks to those best suited for the responsibility and overseeing their performance
  • While the CEO works to oversee activities that bring in new relationships, the COO oversees activities in managing the maintenance of ongoing relationships
  • The COO is responsible for executing the strategic plan and vision that is communicated from the CEO & President. Examples include innovating programs, identifying solutions to problems, building staffing efficiencies, and project management
  • The COO is expected to fully embrace the ZERO culture in partnership with the CEO & President while managing personnel with the same philosophy by reinforcing communicating clarity, strengthening high responsibility and high freedom among staff, and leading with curiosity
  • Implement ZERO’s strategic internally, build operational capacity for long term-growth while scaling all resources appropriately
  • Manage budgeting process, assess business metrics and finances, and make recommendations on strategies to minimize risk
  • Lead with an entrepreneurial spirit, remaining flexible, and lead by example
  • Provide strong financial leadership by ensuring solid financial accountability and enhanced financial controls through partnering with the Financial Controller and Leadership Team. 
  • Leads operations and team leaders to set and meet financial goals for organizational growth and impactful performance
  • Manage ongoing operating objectives within the management team such as funding, finances, operations, communications, and programmatic aspects
  • Provide leadership oversight of VP level direct reports 
  • Prepare and coordinate operational reports such as quarterly metrics, financial and funding reports, and board materials on our performance, impact, and effectiveness

  • Proficient in Google Workspace, Slack, Microsoft Suite, Raiser’s Edge and other project management systems

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Management, Organizational Development, Marketing, Finance, or a related field of study or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Ten years of experience leading holistic operational functions for a large diverse team 
  • Three to five years in an Operations Leadership role 
  • Proven track record of leading strategic change, business objectives, and a team across a variety of functions 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters of Business Administration (MBA), Masters in NonProfit Management, Masters in Public Administration, Executive MBA or a related field of study or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Nonprofit Management Certificate
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification
  • Ten to 15 years of experience leading Operations and a large team at a nonprofit.
  • Experience leading a remote workforce
  • Three to five years in an Operations Leadership role at a nonprofit

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant use of a computer and other office productivity equipment, such as computer printer, calculator, and copier
  • Prolonged periods of a stationary position at least 50% of the time
  • The ability to recognize details at close range for extended periods of time
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
  • Frequent movement across multiple different terrains/surfaces while outdoors at Run/Walks.

This role will report directly to the CEO & President and will work closely with the Management Team and Leaders (VPs and Directors) within the organization to support ZERO’s mission to end prostate cancer. 

This position can be based remotely anywhere within the United States. While travel is currently limited due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this position will eventually require nationwide travel approximately up to 20% of the time.
