In 2016, Mat raced IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder with Team ZERO to raise awareness for prostate cancer. The team’s slogan is “Add Meaning to Your Miles. Help End Prostate Cancer.” As Mat crossed the finish line, those words resonated deeply with him: “This was so much more than another race. I had a team cheering me on, and men counting on me to fight for them.”
Prostate cancer is personal to Mat. His wife lost her first husband to the disease, and Mat is helping to raise the two boys who lost their father at such a young age.
After racing Boulder, Mat was determined to take his training and desire to drive awareness for the disease to the next level. He put his name in the hat for the 2017 Norseman Xtreme Triathlon in Norway, a highly competitive event that only admits 250 people annually. On his first attempt, he got in. This August, he will represent Team ZERO at one of the most grueling endurance events in the world.
Mat hopes to raise $10,000 for ZERO to help educate men about getting tested and knowing their risks for the disease.
