ZERO Partners With NHL for Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month

Washington D.C. – The National Hockey League® (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) have again partnered with ZERO - The Project to End Prostate Cancer for Hockey Fights Cancer, an initiative focused on raising funds and awareness for cancers in the month of October.

"We're honored to work with the NHL and commend the league and its teams for being leaders in the fight to end prostate cancer," said Skip Lockwood, ZERO’s CEO. "Support from Hockey Fights Cancer allows us to test more than 500 men for prostate cancer and fund research that will lead us to the cure.”

The donation to ZERO will help fund The Drive Against Prostate Cancer, which offers free PSA testing to men across America, as well as fund prostate cancer education and research programs in cities with high-risk populations. ZERO will also be providing free testing and educational activities at select NHL team home games during the season.

New this season, ZERO is partnering with Millennium Pharmaceuticals and the Boston Bruins on Patients' Assists, a season-long campaign where ZERO will receive a $100 donation for every assist the Bruins rack up.

"With the support of our teams, players, charitable partners and fans, we are honored to continue hockey's most important fight during Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Month," said Kenneth Martin, Jr., NHL Vice President of Community Affairs. "Throughout October and the entire season, the hockey family will continue its commitment to raising funds to support cancer awareness and research and will remain devoted to helping find a cure for cancer."

The NHL® and the NHLPA will distribute more than $200,000 in grants to ZERO, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Prostate Cancer Canada, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, as well as local cancer charities in all 30 NHL markets. For the 14th straight year, the NHL and the NHLPA will mobilize the entire hockey community in hopes of exceeding the $1.1 million raised and donated as part of last year's efforts.

About ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer (zerocancer.org)

At ZERO, we commit ourselves not only to reduce prostate cancer or alleviate the pain from the disease, but also to end it. We see a future where all men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer will be cured or manage their illness with good quality of life; with the support they need to minimize physical and emotional suffering, and to cope effectively throughout their cancer journey. To accomplish our goal, we provide comprehensive treatment information to patients, education to those at risk and conduct free prostate cancer testing throughout the country. We increase research funds from the federal government to find new treatments and we fund local grants to end the disease.
