'The Flintstones' Turn 50! Time to Get that PSA Test, Fred
WASHINGTON, DC – He may eat dinosaur steaks and mammoth ribs that shun the USDA's serving size recommendations, but Fred Flintstone knows a thing or two about a healthy lifestyle. For example, the Flintstones have their own line of vitamins, which are enjoyed by people of all ages, and he's getting his daily exercise (and cutting down on pollution) by powering his car with his bare feet. But as Fred and the rest of the Bedrock crew celebrate their 50th anniversary today, ZERO — The Project to End Prostate Cancer wants to remind Fred about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer.
"Getting your prostate checked is nothing to yell 'Yabba Dabba Doo' about, but it can save your life," ZERO CEO Skip Lockwood said. "One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fred owes it to Wilma and Pebbles to do the right thing so he can have a long healthy life."
However, men with a family history of prostate cancer should begin annual prostate cancer testing at the age of 40—as well as African American men whose chances of getting the disease are 60% higher than Caucasian men.
"Fortunately, men don't need to go see Dr. Stoneyfingers to get an exam like Fred has to in Bedrock. Prostate cancer testing is quick and easy and when prostate cancer is caught early, it has a 99 percent survival rate," said Lockwood.
